Welcome to Hacienda Wellness Newsletter #2. Today we'll
be dealing with a topic close to everyone's heart (in that
your stomach is right next to your heart): portion sizes.
Specifically in restaurants. Because getting healthier
doesn't have to mean cooking every meal
every day. In fact, that's a sure fire way for a plan to be
abandoned. So, we out we go. Have
you been out lately? Have you noticed the absolutely CRAZY
amount of food restaurants are putting on plates these days?
Most times it's enough to feed you 3 times over. If you're
like me, you remember those starving kids in _______, and you
work to cram most if not ALL of it in. Then you feel like crap
for the next 4 hours. It's just plain NO GOOD. Eating out
shouldn't be a contest. It should be fun.

What's worse is,
one simple night of that can stretch your stomach out so that
the rest of the week, you need to eat more to attain
"fullness". Which means more calories. Which means more of you
& me. So, what to do to avoid this vicious cycle? Here are
3 simple ways to cut back that'll save you both money &
calories.
What's worked for me is splitting
entrees with someone, usually my hubby. Saves us money,
caloric intake, and allows for bonding, "Man, wasn't that
awesome?" This of course is limited to people at your table,
strangers probably won't be as receptive. What if you're
eating alone or don't WANT what they want? Well,
why not eat half and take home your leftovers. You'll save
some money making two meals out of one. And you'll have a
night off from wondering what to cook. Or you'll have an
awesome lunch one day at work. Or, donate to your local
homeless guy on the train/corner/etc. Either way it's half the
calories being put into YOUR body in one sitting. But what if
you have shopping/etc to do after you eat?

As
entrée sizes have gotten out of control, so have appetizer
sizes. And most places, I have found, have appetizers big
enough to serve as full meals. If you're like me, a lot of the
time the appetizer menu actually looks BETTER than the
entrees. Grilled shrimp skewer over small salad? You bet. And,
you guessed it, you'll save both money &
calories. So,
what did we learn today? Going out doesn't have to impact your
waistline and your wallet. Getting healthy doesn't have to be
complex & involved. Very simple steps over time are your
best bet, and that's why Hacienda Wellness exists. For more
info on portion sizes and what you can do about them,
including AT HOME, I highly recommend a book called "Mindless
Eating" by Brian Wansink. Here is a link to
purchase via Amazon. Until next month,
cheers!
