New
Years Resolutions
Welcome to my
first newsletter!!! And thank you for joining the Hacienda
community. As it's January, it's Resolution time. For many
people, this means pledges to lose weight, take better care of
themselves and exercise more, all of which are VERY good
things to try to implement into your life. This is also the
time of year when people decide to detoxify the body from the
overindulgences of the Holidays and the past year.
Detoxing, in most people's minds, means a dramatic,
restrictive diet and not being able to leave the house outside
of work for as long as they can stand it (I know for me,
usually day 8 or so, I'm done). As my mission is to create
simple, REAL world ways to get healthy, I have one simple word
for you: water.
|
How
Much Water Should I Drink?
We
all know water makes up yadda yadda % of body mass yadda, and
we know we're supposed to drink 8 glasses a day. But if you're
like me, you wonder what exactly constitutes a glass: a coffee
mug? A pint? Here is the simple way to know if you're drinking
enough: Take your weight in pounds, divide that number in
half. Drink that many ounces of water a day. So, for a 140
pound person, you'd need to drink 70 ounces of water.
Yes, there's some measuring involved to figure out
what THAT means, so try this trick: Take the glass you're
designating as your water glass (or bottle). Find a measuring
cup. If you don't have a measuring cup use a regular size
coffee mug, filled to ½" left at the top. If you only have a
pint glass, fill it halfway. If that's too technical, we'll
wait while you go buy a measuring cup. Now then, take the
measuring/coffee cup/pint glass and see how many times you
need to fill it (pouring it into your water glass/bottle)
before your designated water glass/bottle is full. A cup holds
8 ounces, coincidentally. So, for the same 140 pound person,
you'd need just about 9 cups of water a day.

And
Then What?
At
first you'll probably feel like it's too much water. And
you'll pee a lot. Stick with it. Once your body gets used to
being hydrated on a regular basis, it starts to do amazing
things like flush toxins, improve mood, increase energy,
improve digestion, and, the bonus is, you can even lose some
weight. I know water was the cornerstone of how I lost 45
pounds without really changing much.
If you find
yourself waking at night more than once to pee, or don't want
to wake up at ALL to pee, tweak WHEN you're drinking your
water. The bulk of you water should be consumed before dinner.
I highly recommend drinking 3-4 cups at room temp first thing
in the morning. With a squeeze of lemon if you can. Also worth
noting, if you drink a cup of coffee, you should try to drink
3x that amount of water to balance out the dehydrating effects
of the coffee. For alcohol, I'd say one for one (ie one pint
of beer, then one pint of water).
So, like Mr Rogers
always said, "What did we learn today?". Well, we learned that
it's a lot easier to just drink water than suffer through
another awful diet or exercise regime we'll only bail on a few
weeks later. We'll talk about new things to eat and ways to
move your body later. Just drink some water: your body will
thank you for it!
Until next
month-
Liz
